Guestbook, 1910-1923.

The Ritters received a blank guestbook as a gift from Ellen Browning Scripps in 1910. It includes the signatures and remarks of guests received by the Ritters at their apartment in the Scripps Laboratory, Scripps Institution of Oceanography from June 24, 1910 when the Ritters first moved to the laboratory to June 23, 1923 when the Ritters left the laboratory and moved to Berkeley. The guestbook includes signatures of virtually all station staff, many members of the Scripps family, University administrators including presidents Benjamin Ide Wheeler, David P. Barrows, W.W. Campbell, and several distinguished visitors including David Starr Jordan, Clarence Darrow and Lincoln Steffens. The guestbook notes social occasions, such as at homes, wedding parties, beach parties, and lists guests.

Ritter, Mary Bennett, 1860-1949

American physician and community activist born in 1860 in Salinas, California. In 1883, Ritter studied medicine with Dr. Euthausia S. Meade of San Jose. She entered Cooper Medical College, San Francisco, in 1884 and graduated in 1886. She interned at Children's Hospital, Berkeley. Ritter took over the medical practice of Dr. Sarah I. Shuey of Berkeley in the late 1880's and continued her practice until 1909. She served as physician to women students at the University of California and was recogn...
